2019: The Investigation That Changed Everything
It started with a simple question from my 8-year-old daughter: “Baba, why does our ugali taste different every time?”
That innocent question sent me on a 6-month investigation that exposed the shocking truth about Tanzania’s food supply chain. What I discovered will make you question every product in your kitchen right now.
What I found at 23 different mills across Tanzania:
- Mixing different grain qualities: Premium maize mixed with low-grade grain to cut costs
- Unknown storage conditions: Some flour had been sitting in warehouses for 8+ months
- No traceability: Not a single mill could tell me which farm their grain came from
- Chemical treatments: Preservatives and bleaching agents were standard practice
- 17 middlemen on average: Each adding 15-30% markup to the final price
The sunflower oil industry was even worse. I traced one bottle from farm to shelf – it passed through 22 different hands and was stored in conditions that would shock you.

Dr. Joseph Yuda Msofe had a vision that seemed impossible: What if Tanzanian families could access truly natural, chemical-free food without paying premium prices?
